As a reporter for the Shadow, I've made it a goal to report on crucial issues with regard to education and politics to inform our audience. The purpose of my news reporting is primarily to ensure that our readers are well-informed about the state of affairs of our school, state and country.
An example of my breaking news. The morning of November 7th, The Southwest Shadow called the 2020 Presidential Election for President-elect Joe Biden, providing crucial information in the headline and the sub-headline. Read more here.
Here is an example of my reporting on school board funding. Actually identifying the human impact of the budget cuts was the goal with this story, along with the aim of the comprehensive infographic inside it. Read more here.
Here is an example of my reporting on an extension of food aid for poor families across the country, especially Nevada. In this piece, I interviewed an important figure in Nevada politics about the human impact of such aid. I think this is my best example of policy reporting on an issue that is real and personal for so many working class families. Read more here.
Here's some policy reporting I did, near the middle of my junior year. The idea was to report on Nevada's congressional delegations' reactions to Biden's military ban reversal. In this article, I managed to balance reporting on the national importance of the issue, with the local angle of Nevadans' reactions to it. Read more here.
Here's an example of my breaking news reporting. Under my discretion, the Shadow called both of Georgia's Senate races for the Democrats before any major outlet, and as a result called the U.S. Senate for Democrats. This was one of my most involved projects at the Shadow, as I had to constantly keep up to date with the latest election information. Read more here.
An example of my education reporting for the Shadow. Here, the news story was that a hybrid model was being implemented for students in the valley. This was an enormous shift from the previous 10 months of almost exclusively online learning. This story covered the contentious fight over the new anti-racism policy that progressives and activists pushed CCSD to adopt. The story also covers the broader context over the fight, including new attempts by progressives at combating alleged racism. Read more here.
My latest story, done with our paper's news editor, touched upon the fears of rising violence in schools around the valley. With the school board eying the best methods of preventing assaults and battery on campus, I found it important to include our administration's perspective on the issue. Read more here.
